Lyrics

A City That Sleeps

Dark is the city that sleeps
It quiets its neighbors and hushes its streets
Its riverbanks flood, it waits for the sun
To dry all the rain, but what’s done is done
Dreaming a dream it can’t keep
My city’s a city that sleeps

Old is the city that waits
It blocks all its highways and locks all its gates
And prays to its God that its walls will last
But the time for prayer has long-since passed
Playing a friend to its state
My city’s a city that waits

Dead is the city that sits
While unfit commanders throw commanding fits
And soldiers with cameras march down its roads
Selling the footage of unwelcome loads
Of bodies burning in pits
My city’s a city that sits

Tell me why my enemies look so much like friends
Weeks become years, facts become lies, war’s a peaceful end

Dark is the city that sleeps
Its greatness has flickered, it lies in defeat
Its history is fiction, a dream that it makes
A nightmare from which it won’t ever wake
Its rest remains willful and deep
My city’s a city that sleeps
